After being denied service for not wearing a face mask at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles in Pasadena, California on Wednesday, an unidentified armed man returned with a firearm and escaped with an undisclosed amount of food.
California enacted a face mask mandate in order to curb the spread of COVID-19. Although people can take off their masks while eating and drinking, all Californians are required to wear a face mask whenever they are outside of their home. The location of Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles had signs in the windows announcing that individuals had to be wearing masks in order to enter.
The suspect left after being asked by restaurant employees to leave for not following the mask mandate. Still not wearing a mask, the man returned by entering the kitchen and brandishing a firearm.
Cook Robert Gonzalez told KABC that the man pointed the gun at him and said, “Put all the chicken in the bag.”
Employees did as the suspect requested. Before leaving, according to manager Angela Prieto, the suspect “took syrup for his chicken.”
No money was taken in the incident. Although the maskless suspect’s face was captured on surveillance footage, the chicken thief is still at large. Newsweek reached out to the Pasadena Police Department for comment.
Prieto said that her staff was frightened by the robbery, but that the cashier on duty eventually “calmed down and started laughing about it because she realized all he did was some take some chicken.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom mandated the wearing of face masks when outside the home in November 2020. Some Californians, however, have grown weary of Newsom’s COVID-19 pandemic response. A petition to recall Newsom has garnered more than 1.4 million signatures. If the petition gains 1.5 million signatures, it could be enough to initiate a special recall election in 2021.
Leader of the Recall Gavin 2020 movement Orrin Heatlie told Fox News on Thursday that Newsom had been “less than mediocre for California.” Heatlie said the high rate of COVID-19 cases was due to Newsom’s “lack of leadership.”
Former mayor of San Diego, Republican Kevin Faulconer, has already announced his bid for Newsom’s seat. In a video posted online in February, Faulconer blasted Newsom’s rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Gavin Newsom promised vaccines but delivered confusion and chaos,” Faulconer said. “He’s failed us year after year.”
Newsom faced heavy criticism after it was revealed that he had attended a November 2020 birthday party at a Napa County restaurant with members of multiple households. Newsom was photographed at the event without wearing a mask. Some critics accused Newsom of flaunting the COVID-19 safety protocols his administration had enacted.
Newsom apologized for the incident, saying during a news briefing that he had “made a bad mistake.”
“You can quibble about the guidelines, et cetera, et cetera,” Newsom added, “but the spirit of what I’m preaching all the time was contradicted and I got to own that.”
