Lauren Boebert Faces Backlash After Urging Biden to Lower Flags for Rush Limbaugh

Republican Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado has faced online backlash from critics after urging President Joe Biden to lower flags to half-staff to honor the life of Rush Limbaugh.

Limbaugh, an unflinchingly conservative radio host and icon, died Wednesday at the age of 70 after a battle with lung cancer. “I’m calling on Joe Biden to order flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Rush Limbaugh,” Boebert tweeted on Friday.

But her call was met with opposition.

News of Limbaugh’s death dealt a heavy blow to conservatives who viewed him as a fearless truth-teller who wasn’t afraid to fall on the wrong side of political correctness in his pursuit of standing against the tyranny of the elite, the idiocies of big government and the out-of-touch left-wing academics and journalists.

On the other hand, Democrats and critics have continued to oppose Limbaugh’s rhetoric after his passing, with some attributing the country’s political polarization to his alleged use of bigoted lies and “alternate” facts.

Democratic Representative Ruben Gallego of Arizona tweeted, “You didn’t call on President Trump to ask him to lower the flag for the officer killed during the January 6th insurrection… but you do for a divisive figure?”

“The flag staff your comrades used to beat a cop? Terrorist sympathizers don’t get to be pious,” tweeted Ron Fournier, a former Washington bureau chief for the Associated Press.

“You shouldn’t be calling on anyone except your lawyer, given your questionable campaign travel reimbursements which just happened to be enough to pay the tax liens you owed. Sit down,” tweeted actor George Takei.

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper wrote, “I’m calling for the mayor of Crazytown to build a statue in your honor.”

Keith Olbermann, an American sports and political commentator, wrote, “In what country? The Confederate States of America?”

Newsweek reached out to Boebert’s office for comment.

Meanwhile, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis faced similar criticism this weekend after he announced that flags in the state will fly at half-staff to honor Limbaugh.

The Florida Senate‘s Democratic Leader Gary Farmer strongly condemned the move. “Lowering the flag of the United States is a high honor reserved for those who have honorably and bravely served our state and our nation,” Farmer said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Governor DeSantis has now transformed this distinction into a partisan political tool to salute a man who served no other interests than his own and did his best to deeply divide a country along political fault lines.”

He added: “I condemn the governor’s decision in no uncertain terms. Any move to lower our flag in deference to a man who helped drive the hatred and inflame the prejudices against marginalized groups, people of color, women, and anyone who did not look like him or think like him is wrong, and should be rescinded. This is not who we are. This is not who we want to be.”
