A family dog has reportedly been euthanized after it attacked and killed a one-month-old baby girl.
The Good Samaritan Ambulance service was called to a residential address at 520 West 14th Street in Southwest Kearney, Nebraska, at about 3 a.m. on February 10, police said.
The Kearney Police Department department said in a statement that their officers were first to arrive on scene, where they found a deceased one-month-old baby girl.
After a subsequent autopsy and investigation, officials concluded that the infant died as a result of “blunt force and cranial trauma caused by an America bulldog that resided with the family,” according to a news release issued by Buffalo County Attorney Shawn Eatherton, seen by KRVN.
The broadcaster reported the dog had shown no prior known aggressive behavior.
The animal was euthanized and the baby girl’s death has been ruled as accidental.
Newsweek has contacted the Buffalo County Attorney for comment.
The incident marks the latest in a string of fatal dog attacks across the U.S. in the last year.
In October, a baby in Virginia was mauled to death by its parents’ pet dog, police said.
The Hampton Police Division said in a statement the infant was killed in the early hours of the morning at a property in the first block of Scotland Road.
Personnel from the Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue pronounced the baby dead at the scene. The infant’s age was not disclosed.
Police said the infant had been sleeping in bed with its parents. The parents were awoken by “a large amount of motion,” at which point the father saw the injuries to the child.
The father then immediately killed the dog, a mixed-breed German Shepherd. The family said the dog had not previously shown any signs of aggression. Animal Control later took possession of the deceased canine.
German Shepherds account for one of the top five dog breeds involved in canine attacks, according to a 2008 survey by The Coalition for Living Safely with Dogs, a Colorado group made up of veterinary associations and animal welfare groups.
The other breeds to top the list are Labrador retrievers, pit bulls, Rottweilers and chow-chows. American bulldogs are not included on the list.
Last month, a child was left in a serious condition after being attacked by a pack of dogs in Detroit, police said.
The 5-year-old boy was mauled by three or four dogs at around 5 a.m. in the 9000 block of Longacre in Detroit.
An adult male was also injured while separating the dogs from the child. The child was taken to hospital by police.
Detroit police are working to figure out how this happened and why. It is not yet known if anyone owns the dogs involved.
